label Grand Site de France, cité de Minerve, Gorges de la Cesse et du Brian

Classified Grand Site of France since December 19, 2025, this national label distinguishes remarkable, protected and valued landscapes in a process of sustainable preservation, while offering quality hospitality to visitors.

It brings together 7 villages, including the city of Minerve in the heart of several thousand hectares of preserved landscapes, mixing the spectacular gorges of the Cesse and the Brian, limestone plateaus, medieval heritage, vibrant terroir and exceptional nature.

Discover an exceptional natural site !

Perched on its rocky spur, Minerve dominates two gorges: the Cesse and the Brian,  whose meeting gives birth to one of the most unique landscapes in the South of France. Here, nature has sculpted over millennia a decor that is almost theatrical where water, limestone, and light play together.

The Cesse and the Brian sculpt canyons, tunnels, and natural bridges that make the uniqueness of the Grand Site. True geological curiosities, the natural bridges (these tunnels carved by the Cesse) are among the emblems of the Grand Site. They tell the underground and tumultuous history of a river that is now intermittent but once powerful.
The Mediterranean vegetation, composed of holm oaks, Montpellier maples, boxwood, and fragrant scrubland, envelops the village and completes this picture of great ecological richness.

A major historical heritage

Minerve is a town rich in history, mentioned since Antiquity and marked by the crusade against the Cathars, notably during the siege of 1210. The village has preserved its medieval character with its paved streets, stone houses, and remnants of ramparts. The Museum of Archaeology and History allows visitors to discover the evolution of the site, from prehistory to modern times.

Did you know?

It is said that during the siege of 1210, Simon de Montfort had a huge trebuchet installed above the gorges named “Malvoisine”, the “Bad Neighbor”. Its target was not the walls, which were too solid,
but the Saint-Rustique well, the only access to water for the inhabitants. In a few shots, the well was destroyed. Denying Minerve its water meant depriving the village of its resistance. Surrender was only a matter of
days.

Wine and Terroir

Located in the heart of the Minervois vineyard, the Grand Site stands out for the diversity of its terroirs and its Mediterranean influence. The appellation includes more than 15,000 hectares of vines, of which about 4,000 ha are certified AOP.

The appellation AOP Minervois.
The Grand Site includes exceptional wines, such as Cru La Livinière, the first cru recognized in Languedoc in 1999. It is distinguished by a more demanding specification: exclusively red wines, rich and varied terroirs, exposure, complexity, and aging potential. The slate terraces, dry stone walls, and huts testify to ancestral work, respectful of nature, which is now rehabilitated. They strongly contribute to the landscape identity of the Grand Site.

In addition, the winemakers of La Caunette submitted in 2020 to the National Institute of Origin and Quality (INAO) a request for official recognition of the Complementary Geographical Indication (DGC) to the Minervois appellation.
Discovering Minervois is tasting a living heritage where landscape, culture, and wine come together. Cave visits and tastings allow you to grasp the diversity of the terroirs, the millennial wine history, and the art of living of the region. The wine routes, oenorandos® or oenobike, labeled Cyclosport, make it easy to discover these treasures on foot, by bike, or by car.

exceptional biodiversity

The gorges of Cesse and Brian form a major ecological corridor, classified as Natura 2000.
This preserved territory hosts many protected species, notably emblematic raptors such as the royal eagle or the peregrine falcon, as well as rare bats in the caves.
Agricultural landscapes, with their vines, orchards, and dry stone walls, also promote biodiversity.
Finally, the limestone plateaus shelter remarkable flora, including orchids, thyme, and wild lavender.

The villages of the Grand Site are discovered like a string of small destinations.
Around Minerve, the gorges of Brian and Cesse unfold six villages, six identities, six gateways to a territory where stone, vine, water, and history compose a living cultural landscape.
