The Cathar City to explore

Minerve is classified among the "Most Beautiful Villages of France". The territory "City of Minerve, Gorges of the Cesse and the Brian" received the label "Grand Site of France" on December 19, 2025. The label highlights the landscapes, heritage, and vineyards of the region while protecting nature and biodiversity. Trails, viewpoints, and local initiatives allow you to discover the site while respecting its environment.

Visiting Minerve is a must-see!

The city emerges in the heart of the limestone causse, protected by the deep gorges of the Cesse and the Brian, where water has sculpted remarkable natural bridges.

Its medieval alleys winding, its freshly restored ramparts make it an incomparable place. Minerve enchants with its preserved heritage and authentic atmosphere.

A journey into the past

Minerve takes its name from the Occitan "Menèrba", derived from the Celtic "men" (stone, rock) and derived from "herbech" ( asylum, refuge).

Intact and enchanting, Minerve invites you to stroll through its terraced gardens and its paved alleyways.

In its medieval alleys, Minerve keeps the memory of the Cathar epic, illustrated at the Hurepel museum. Meanwhile, the archaeological museum highlights the significant paleontological discoveries of the Aldène cave, located nearby.

NATURAL BRIDGES

Geological curiosity

Discover this geological curiosity that gave rise to natural caves carved by the Cesse River.

In Minerve, the Cesse and the Brian have carved a canyon and deep gorges into the limestone plateaus. The course has changed as it approached the soft rocks, creating two tunnels or bridges:

- The « Little Bridge » is 120 m long with an average height of 15 m

- The « Big Bridge » extends over 250 m with a height varying from 6 m to 28 m

In the beautiful season, follow the course of the river and walk dry under these majestic arches.

How to access the Natural Bridges of Minerve ?

  • Go to the Porta bassa at the end of the street of the Poterne,
  • Descend to the beach at the bottom of the stairs when the river is not too high (do not hesitate to call our office to find out if the level of the Cesse allows for crossing),
  • Follow the bed of the Cesse until you find yourself under the Natural Bridges

LA CESSE ET LE BRIAN

Two rivers shaping the territory

The Gorges of the Cesse and the Brian, as well as the Causses are part of the remarkable landscapes of Minervois.

The limestone plateau and the gorges have been shaped by water, which has produced this typical karst relief composed of caves, faults, and diaclases in which water infiltrates and circulates underground.

The Cesse has the particularity of disappearing during fine weather for about 17 km! It abandons its aerial course upstream of Minerve and reappears at Agel at the resurgence called Le Boulidou. It then continues its course and flows into the Aude at Sallèle d'Aude after crossing the Canal du Midi.

To discover the Gorges of Brian, prepare your hike on the PR path Cité de Minerve

Following the beautiful road of the Gorges de la Cesse, starting from Minerve and heading towards La Livinière, a stop is necessary at the Meulières trail to discover an archaeological site through a one-kilometer path, very easy to access, punctuated with interpretation panels.  An enriching walk to discover the extraction of the millstones that were used to equip the mills of the region between the Middle Ages and the 19th century... Additionally, 360° views of the Black Mountain, the Minervois, the Pyrénées !
