Saint Laurent Church

OLARGUES

A bit of history

Located at the top of the Staircase of the Commandery in Olargues, this church of Romanesque Languedoc art was built with stones from the old Church of the Castrum and inaugurated in 1688.

The current church in the village was only built at the very end of the 17th century, replacing the castle church Saint-Laurent from the 12th century currently in ruins, the only remaining vestige still standing is the bell tower, which was initially the keep of the castle, transformed into a bell tower in the 15th century. The old bell tower has been listed as a historical monument since December 8, 1928.

The current church is sought after for its painting of the martyrdom of Saint Laurent (19th century) and the organ installed in 1900 (executed between 1845 and 1850 by Abbot Clergeau) classified as a historical monument in March 1984.
