Azillanet

azillanet

Entre Aude et Cesse, Azillanet avait déjà séduit les romains par la fertilité de ses terres

Azillanet, perched at an altitude of 108 meters on a fertile hill, owes its name to that of Attila and the appropriation suffix "an". 405 Azillanetois (es) live in this village located on the first foothills of the Causse, between Cesse and Aude.
Its landscapes of vineyards and olive groves and its Mediterranean vegetation, had already seduced the Romans; since then, dry stone constructions have come to decorate its landscapes. In the heart of Cathar country, the village will be besieged during the crusade against the Albigensians, torn by the wars of religion, and looted during the Hundred Years War by the troops of the Black Prince.
The old town was once fortified; the road to Minerva that passes by his heart leads to the church Saint-Laurent. Built in 1678, it is contiguous to the old fortress of Guillaume d'Azillanet.
The Lion's Fountain, an original work sculpted in the rock by Jean Buckart in the nineteenth century, is also part of the local heritage, as well as the old wash houses and horts, the gardens of the village.
Azillanet owes its name to Attila (name of person) and the appropriation suffix "an".

Located on the first foothills of the Causse, between Aude and Cesse, Azillanet had already seduced the Romans by the fertility of his land.
Vines, olive groves, Mediterranean vegetation, dry stone compose the landscapes. Involved in the history of Catharism, the village will then be looted during the Hundred Years War by the troops of the Black Prince, as in all Minervois. The road that leads to Minerve climbs through the old, once fortified town, which retains all its authenticity with the church of St. Lawrence, built in 1678 and adjoining the old fortress of Guillaume d'Azillanet.
In addition to the old wash houses and horts - the village gardens - the Lion's Fountain, an original work sculpted in the rock by Jean Buckart in the 19th century, is also part of the local heritage.
