The village is nestled below a long wooded hill "La Serre", 95 meters. Its name comes from the Domaine d'Oppianus, from the Latin "oppida", which means "height". 230 Oupian (es) live in this village near Olonzac.

The lords of Oupia were vassals of the Viscounts of Minerva. The old village dominates the plain and many vestiges of the fortified enclosure recall the defensive role of the city and its castle.

The Saint-Etienne church, rebuilt late nineteenth in a Gothic style, houses a carved altar support dating from the Visigothic period.
